Children with disabilities will soon have the opportunity
to play baseball just like every other child in the Big Bend
area, thanks to collaboration between the County and City governments and
local agencies. With significant contributions, including $75,000 from Leon
County, the use of Messer
North Softball Complex from the City of Tallahassee,
and fundraising efforts by Kiwanis Clubs, a Miracle League field will
soon become a reality in Leon County.
This field will be constructed with rubber for
ease-of-use by wheelchairs. Even the bases and pitching mound are level
with the field, so children in wheelchairs will have free reign of the
entire field. Kiwanis has willingly taken on the role of coordination and
fundraising. Kiwanis has been integral to the project management and
success of the Miracle League Field. Division 3 Kiwanis has already
raised more than $100,000 and has committed to assist in raising the
remaining $250,000 projected cost.
